Founding Director | Amelia Taylor

Hi!

My name is Amelia, and I am the founding director of Mills Studio.

I am an Adelaide-based sound engineer with a deep love of podcasts and sound design. The thing I love most about podcasts and audio-based storytelling is the connection that it brings; connection between clients, their stories, and the world.

My Story

Music and sound have always been central to my life. One of my favourite stories from my childhood is that I would only settle when resting on my Pop’s chest, as he sang the “dum-diddle” song — or so I’ve been told.

My mum was a music teacher for over 30 years and was perhaps the most influential figure in shaping my relationship with music. We would sing together in the car on the way to school or around the piano at home.

Growing up, I always aspired to pursue a career in the music industry. Throughout school, I immersed myself in music and found creative ways to incorporate it into other subjects, like science, maths, and history. The intersection of multimedia and traditional academic disciplines has always fascinated me.

In 2020, I began my Bachelor of Music at the Australian National University (ANU), majoring in composition and music technology. It was during my degree that I discovered my passion for blending the creative aspects of sound design with the technical processes of recording and post-production. I seized every opportunity to expand my knowledge, assisting in the university’s recording studio and interning at Infidel Studios.

My honours year allowed me to delve deeper into the intersection of sound design and recording, focusing on how sound shapes our connection to the world around us.

After graduating in 2023, I founded Mills Studio, where I began my professional journey in podcast production. Since then, I’ve had the privilege of collaborating with clients across Australia, furthering my passion for sound and storytelling.

Here at Mills Studio, we firmly believe in the power of stories as they are not just records of one’s life but are anchors of one’s experiences. We strive to exceed expectations, deliver exceptional products, and give a voice to stories not yet shared.

Honours Thesis

Framed by an acoustic ecological perspective, my Honours thesis considered the motivations and awareness of Foley practice within the production of nature documentaries. The sounds of arachnids took a central role as the subject of investigation. This study's methodology and framework investigated how humans connect with sound, and the environment through film. Nature documentaries combine aesthetics with knowledge in their journalistic context of the world. Through the commonly negative preconceived notions of the nature of spiders, I investigated the influence of listening and the strive towards the integrity of sound when replicating them within a film soundscape.

Conducted within a home studio environment, I was able to further appreciate the serendipitous influence of the environments in which we create on creative practice. The intersection of each consideration within this research advocates for Foley, as an art form, to be considered as a medium for soundscape study.
